I am a visual artist based in Cardiff, and recently completed an MA in Fine Art at the University of South Wales. Having previously studied History of Art and with an MA in Philosophy and Economics, I am interested in the visual symbols and signs of class difference and social hierarchy, what drives conspicuous consumption and questions such as 'what is good taste?' I am obsessed with interior design and my work is an enquiry into why this is the case, looking at the attraction that designed interiors and products have for us all.
The photographs of fashionable and stylish interiors in magazines, blogs and websites that we aspire to, are the starting point for my work. We not only admire the aesthetics of these interiors but imagine ourselves with a more sociable/relaxed/organised/healthy lifestyle if only we had a home like that. Yet these photographed interiors have been carefully manipulated and styled and are no more real than the airbrushed models in fashion magazines. Viewing these aspirational images as a façade I wanted to subvert them, and imagined them hiding common social problems such as addiction, depression or debt. In my work 'Thoroughbred', I focused on the growing problem of drug use in wider society, i.e. the 'normalization' of recreational drug use in more affluent sections of society.
