'Parlour' by Tina Carr and Annemarie Schone
2019

This installation was created for the 'Interior Monologues' show at Oriel y Bont. Each contributing artist was asked to respond to a work in the permanent art collection of the University of South Wales and I chose 'Parlour' by Tina Carr and Annemarie Schone. But I found I couldn't respond to the image in terms of its interior design, rather I imagined various scenarios to explain why it had been abandoned. This led me to think about geographic inequality in the UK, generational inequality, the housing crisis and the benefits system.

Taking inspiration from an innovative council estate built in 1949 (the Spa Green Estate by Berthold Lubetkin) this work examines the fate of many social housing schemes, where tenants have been displaced by private owners or middle-class renters. Renovation of a building followed by a 'renovation' of its inhabitants? All in the best possible taste.

The photographs of fashionable and stylish interiors in magazines, blogs and websites that we aspire to, were the starting point for this work. We aspire to homes like these and yet these photographed interiors have been carefully manipulated and styled and are no more real than the airbrushed models in fashion magazines. Viewing the images as a façade I imagined them hiding common social problems such as addiction, depression or debt. I wanted to subvert these aspirational images in some way, to uncover the veil of respectability and status.
